I have always thought of art as something that I was, not as something that I do. We are surrounded by so many wonders and sadly these wonders are all too often missed by most people. When was the last time you noticed a sunset, the color of spring leaves or the sound of your children’s laughter? As an artist I take great pains to observe everything from the obvious to the obscure.
When I began working as a jeweler I found inspiration in geometric patterns keeping things very simple, clean, and crisp. I became more confident as I honed my skills which allowed me to pursue more challenging designs. It was not long before I discovered the Art Deco and Nouveau schools of design. Currently most of my metal jewelry falls into one of these two categories.
1998 was a pivotal year for me as well as my business; this was the year I quit smoking and, in need of a stress reliever, I discovered beading. It was not long before it became an obsession. My beaded jewelry tends to be more experimental in nature though it is very well received. Most people take great pleasure in handling my beaded work, often times amazed at what they are seeing.
Recently, I have begun exploring a new avenue artistically. Several of my customers commented to me that they wished they had a way to display my beaded jewelry as art, rather than having it spend most of it’s time in a jewelry box. In response, I have begun making beaded pictures that are suited for framing. Using the same looming techniques that I use in my jewelry, I am now creating artworks that can be enjoyed daily.
